Off the back of his stellar autumn/winter 2014 show, Richard Nicoll has been named the creative director of Jack Wills. The news caught many by surprise. Where Nicoll is known for his sporty tailoring Jack Wills is renown for its preppy aesthetic so it’s fair to say that they’re not the most obvious bedfellows.
Nicoll is on top form right now, sending out yet another strong collection this week so you can’t blame Jack Wills from trying to tap into its popularity right now.
‘His collections have global appeal, but he is a British designer at heart and will lead the creative direction of our brand into its next important phase,’ Jack Wills CEO Wendy Becker said in a statement today. ‘His aesthetic and talent in designing for both men and women will be a great match for our future vision for Jack Wills and reinforces our commitment to having quality and design at our heart.’
Whether you like Jack Wills or not, his appointment is big news for British design talent as more and more of them are snapping up lucrative deals with the big labels, which, no doubt, will only serve as a good thing for their namesake lines. But if you are worried about how his new role will impact his line, fear not because he’s only working with the brand part-time to allow him the freedom to dedicate the time he needs to his eponymous line.
